Originally the location of buildings housing the former guard division but later developed as a forest park, the area was open to the public in 1969. The park is surrounded by evergreen trees such as camphor trees and machilus trees, and has grass and a pond in the center around which deciduous trees and flowering trees such as zelkova trees and quercus acutissima have been planted. The National Museum of Modern Art is located next to the park whilst the park itself is home to the Science Museum and the Nippon Budokan. Tayasumon gate and the Shimizumon gate have been designated as national important cultural assets.
