Environmental Compliance

We comply with environmental laws and regulations such as the Energy Conservation Act and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Environmental Protection Ordinances.

Environmental Compliance

Compliance with the Energy Conservation Law

Since FY2008/3, railway businesses have as specified carriers been submitting medium- and long-term plans and periodic reports on reducing energy consumption to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In addition, since FY2011/3 Tokyo Metro and some covered Group companies have been compiling reports and submitting medium- and long-term plans and periodic reports to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for all of our operations except the railway business.

Compliance with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Environmental Protection Ordinances

The Report System on Global Warming Countermeasures covers small- and medium-sized operations owned by Tokyo Metro. We compile and submit the energy consumption volume and energy conservation measures of each business location to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
In addition, as a large-scale business Tokyo Metro Urban Development Co., Ltd. is covered by the Obligation to Reduce Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the Emissions Trading System, and is working on measures to reduce greenhouse gases.

Tokyo Metro publishes a Global Warming Countermeasures Report, which is required to be submitted and published under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Environmental Protection Ordinances.
In order to promote the reduction of CO2 etc. emissions from business activities, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Report System on Global Warming Countermeasures requires businesses of a certain size or larger to report and publicize their CO2 emissions volume and implementation of energy-saving measures, etc. for each business location.
The data published by Tokyo Metro can be viewed on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Environment website (the Report System on Global Warming Countermeasures publication page; some content is available in Japanese only).

Compliance with the Ordinance on the Promotion of Low-Carbon Buildings that Protect the Living Environment of Minato City Residents

Minato City established the new Minato City Report System on Global Warming Countermeasures based on the Ordinance on the Promotion of Low-Carbon Buildings that Protect the Living Environment of Minato City Residents that took effect on April 1, 2021. The System aims to raise awareness of environmental friendliness by businesses and make the environmental performance of existing buildings visible to residents.
As a result, owners of business locations (buildings or premises) with a total area of 10,000 m2 or more in Minato City are required to submit and publish reports on global warming countermeasures for their business locations. Tokyo Metro also submits reports on CO2 emissions and energy consumption of our existing buildings.

The published data can be viewed on the Minato City website (the Minato City Report System on Global Warming Countermeasures publication page).

Compliance with the Construction Recycling Law

We are obligated to separate and recycle construction by-products generated in the improvement work of stations and other facilities, and we are promoting recycling in those construction works.

Proper Disposal of Asbestos

Some train cars manufactured in the past have small amounts of asbestos in the insulation, and some buildings also contain asbestos. It is managed appropriately by implementing containment measures. In accordance with the Ordinance on Prevention of Asbestos Hazards, when vehicles are scrapped they are isolated in enclosed spaces to prevent dispersal and dismantled after removing asbestos-containing items. If any additional asbestos is found, we will properly dispose of it in accordance with laws and regulations.

Strict Management and Proper Disposal of PCB Waste

PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) is harmful to the human body. We report on it every fiscal year as required under the PCB Special Measures Act and aim to dispose of it as soon as possible.

Recovery and Management of Fluorocarbons

Refrigerants used in station and train car air conditioners which use CFCs specified in the Ozone Layer Protection Act are being replaced with CFC substitutes. In accordance with the Fluorocarbon Emission Control Act, we properly dispose of fluorocarbons recovered from scrapped air conditioners and carefully manage the equipment currently in use.
