As part of its effort to realize its Vision of creating the Next "Normal" and the Next "Exciting," Tokyo Metro Group has identified 10 key sustainability issues (materiality). With reference to guidelines such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, the Sustainability Promotion Committee held ongoing workshops to identify, evaluate, and validate the appropriateness of social issues in terms of Key Sustainability Issues (Materiality). After multiple discussions by the Board of Directors, 10 important social issues were identified and further categorized into five themes.
In February 2020, we engaged in dialog with external experts to validate the appropriateness of the content, including the process of identifying materiality. The experts provided a range of opinions drawing on their expertise in various fields, based on which we conducted internal revalidation, and reflected the results in our materiality.
We focused on internal discussions in identifying materiality. During the identification process, cross-sectoral discussions were held multiple times at each level of the company, including by junior and mid-career employees, general managers, and executive officers. Finally, building on the discussions at each level, the Board of Directors held their own discussions and made a resolution.
In conjunction with the formulation of a new Mid-Term Management Plan, which began in FY2026/3, we revised our key sustainability issues (materiality) as follows.
By further expanding the overseas railway business, we aim to generate revenues while contributing to the development of overseas cities through the realization of environmentally-friendly railway systems. To reflect these goals, we revised material issue "07 Overseas development and support" to "07 Overseas development and contribution." We also changed the categorization of this material issue from Theme 4 to Theme 1.
The Group DE&I Declaration was announced in 2023. As we intend to emphasize not only diversity but also equity and inclusion, we have revised material issue "09 Respect human rights, promote diversity and inclusion, develop human resources" to "09 Respect human rights, promote DE&I, and develop human resources."
As part of our work to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the following table summarizes the relationship between materiality and the 17 goals and 169 targets laid out in the SDGs. We will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through various measures, with Goal 11, "Sustainable Cities and Communities," as the most relevant target, and 8, 9, 13, 16, and 17 as the next most relevant targets.
