Efforts Toward Resource Circulation

Providing upcycled long seat cushions made from train car seats destined for waste disposal as a thank-you gift for Koto City hometown tax payments

Tokyo Metro launched "Relax at Home with Metro" - upcycled long seat cushions made from actual seats used on the Tozai Line 05 Series and Hanzomon Line 08 Series train cars - for Koto City hometown tax payments.(Both the Tozai Line and Hanzomon Line run through Koto City, making these train cars a familiar presence to Koto residents.)
Train seat covers require regular replacement. As part of our efforts to achieve a decarbonized and sound material-cycle society, we collaborated with a company whose core product is bedding (futons and cushions) to develop upcycled long seat cushions made from seats that had been destined for disposal. This initiative contributes to a reduction of approximately 400kg-CO2 per train set. (Seat cover condition was checked and carefully cleaned by a specialist in Koto City, and then sewn into the most suitable shape for seat cushions.)

Development of Upcycled Products Using Materials Originally Destined for Waste Disposal

To explore the development of attractive products by adding new value to items that would otherwise be discarded, Tokyo Metro launched the Tokyo Metro Upcycling Project, which utilizes materials such as seat fabric from the Marunouchi Line 02 series trains and used uniforms to create a variety of merchandise. We will continue to promote the development of upcycled products, which utilize the original materials to their fullest potential, while working to reduce environmental impact and providing our customers with new value.

  • First Upcycled Products: Commercial launch of the Tokyo Metro Logo Pouch, the Tokyo Metro Button Small Pouch, and the Tokyo Metro Button Key Chain
  • Second Upcycled Products: Commercial launch of the Work Cap based on a retro maintenance worker cap design
  • Third Upcycled Products: Commercial launch of the Tokyo Metro Logo Pencil Case based on Phase 1 products

Supporting SAF Production and Participating in the Fry to Fly Project

Tokyo Metro supports initiatives to reuse used cooking oil as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other products, as part of its efforts to realize a decarbonized society. The Tokyo Metro Group provides these initiatives with used cooking oil (5,600kg annually) generated by Group company-operated stores, cafeterias, etc. We also participate in the Fry to Fly Project, which aims to realize a carbon-free society through domestic resource recycling, and we disseminate related information via our train-board Tokyo Metro Vision units and other media.

  • Planned and implemented an event at Urayasu Station on the Tozai Line to collect used cooking oil with the participation of local residents.
  • In collaboration with Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, a participating company in this project, we also collected used cooking oil at the Introduction to Circular Living event held on May 31, 2025 in Taito-ku and other areas.

Conclusion of Memorandum of Understanding on Basic Policy for Joint Research on Horizontal Recycling of Aluminum Automobile Bodies

In January 2025, Tokyo Metro, Metro Sharyo Co., Ltd., Honda Trading Co., Ltd., Japan General Recycling Co.,Ltd., Nikkeikin Aluminium Core Technology Co., Ltd., Kawasaki Rolling Stock Corporation, and Suminoe Industries Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the basic guidelines for joint research and began discussions to conduct joint research into the horizontal recycling*1 of aluminum vehicle bodies for Tokyo Metro's rolling stock.
Tokyo Metro has as history of carrying out cascade recycling*2 of aluminum scrap from discarded vehicle bodies. In this joint research project, from FY2025/3 to FY2028/3, we will conduct technical verification aimed at establishing a technical process for horizontally recycling aluminum scrap used in the bodies of decommissioned Tokyo Metro trains without downgrading it, and reusing it as a portion of train car body structures as well as train car interior parts.
Through this joint research, we will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by recycling and extending the life of aluminum, a precious resource, thereby reducing CO2 supply chain emissions during the manufacturing of new rolling stock and further contributing to the realization of a decarbonized, sound material-cycle society in the railway industry.

  • 1. Horizontal recycling: Recycling that returns materials to alloys of the same purity and composition. Strict sorting and adjustment are required to prevent deterioration.
  • 2. Cascade recycling: Recycling that downgrades materials to low-purity materials with high impurity content. Because properties are deteriorated and altered, the substances cannot be returned to their original elements, but they can be reused as engineering materials.

Recycling of used train tickets and commuter passes

Used paper tickets (such as ordinary tickets) are recycled into products such as toilet paper, and plastic cards (such as magnetic commuter passes) are recycled into solid fuel.

Recycling rate of used train tickets and commuter passes: 100%

Promotion of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) across the Entire Business

The Tokyo Metro Group works to reduce its environmental impact by properly separating and recycling waste generated at stations and construction sites, as well as from decommissioned trains.

  • Waste and Construction By-Products
We work to reuse and recycle waste - generated mainly from stations, offices, and construction works - for various purposes.
Of the construction by-products generated during improvement work such as at stations, construction soil is reused for reclamation of port facilities and infill at disused quarries, while asphalt and concrete chunks are used as recycled materials for road restoration work.

Recycling rate of construction by-products: 100%

  • Train Cars
We work to reduce our environmental impact by thoroughly sorting and recycling materials at the time of train car scrapping. For example, we recycle the aluminum used in vehicle bodies. In addition, we also transfer decommissioned trains to other railways, prolonging their original purpose of use.

Recycling and reuse rate of train car bodies: 100%

  • Water from Vehicle Washing
Some of the waste water from train car depots is used in automatic train exterior washers after improving the quality of the water with water treatment equipment using ion exchange resin.

Rate of using of recycled water in automated train washing machines: 81%

  • Retired Train Cars
After retirement from Tokyo Metro, some train cars are transferred to rail operators in Japan and overseas. In FY2025/3, former Hibiya Line 03 Series cars were introduced on the Jomo Electric Railway.

Implementation of Measures Related to a Sound Material-Cycle Society

Together with local governments and local residents, we work to clean up station premises, entrance buildings, and surrounding areas. We will continue to promote environmental conservation activities in partnership with the communities along railway lines.
In addition, during Environment Month (June) and Food Waste Reduction Month (October) we conduct group-wide awareness-raising activities through email and other means.

Environmental Education

In order to realize a sustainable society with peace of mind, we conduct sustainability training for all employees and executive study meetings to raise the awareness of individual employees, who are the main drivers of environmental conservation activities.
