Promoting Health Management

We support the mental and physical health of our employees and their families, which is the bedrock of on-the-job motivation for all employees. The Health Management Promotion Committee, chaired by the executive officer in charge of the Human Resources Department, sets numerical targets for key initiatives (such as smoking cessation, exercise, and sleep) to ensure that health issues are addressed, and it plans and organizes health promotion activities. In addition, based on the Tokyo Metro Group Health Declaration, Tokyo Metro Group employees, companies, and health insurance associations work together to actively promote mental and physical health to continue providing customers with peace of mind and so that employees and their families can lead happy and fulfilling lives. As a result of our efforts to create a workplace where employees can work with healthy minds and bodies, we were certified as a Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organization (large enterprise category) in March 2025, recognizing us as a company that practices excellent health and productivity management.

External Evaluation

2025 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organization

As a result of our efforts aiming to create a workplace where employees can work with healthy minds and bodies, we were certified as a 2025 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organization in March 2025, recognizing us as a company that practices excellent health and productivity management. The Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program aims to “make visible” corporations with excellent health management so they can be widely recognized by employees, job seekers, affiliated companies, and financial institutions as engaging in the strategic management of the health of employees and others from a managerial perspective. The system recognizes small, medium, and large-sized companies that are particularly adept at health management based on their efforts in line with local health issues and the health promotion efforts promoted by the NIPPON KENKO KAIGI (Japan Health Council).

Metro Health Action

In order to address the lifestyle-related diseases, mental health, illnesses caused by smoking, and health issues by segment (such as gender and age group) which are health issues at Tokyo Metro - as well as to prevent disease from occurring - we promote organized initiatives focusing on diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and smoking, and encourage each and every employee to actively participate in health promotion.

Diet

In addition to the Office Okan service for field employees whose work requires overnight stays, we provide healthy company meals created by a registered dietitian as options in the cafeteria to support employees' health from a dietary perspective.

Exercise

We hold the "Walk, don!" event, creating competition about the total number of steps taken in a month, and virtual relay races, where participants can run whenever and wherever they want. Many employees who do not exercise regularly also participate in the programs, providing an opportunity for them to get into exercise. Both events also promote active communication within the workplace by forming workplace teams. Employees across a wide range of ages participate because of the ease of engagement via smartphone app. (In the post-implementation questionnaire, more than 90% of the participants answer each time that they are "satisfied with the event" and "would like to participate again")

Sleep

We run a sleep improvement program to improve the quality of employees’ sleep. In addition to learning about the basics of sleep, the program uses smartwatches to "visualize" sleep, providing participants with an opportunity to learn about their own sleep in an objective way. At the end of the program, participants' subjective sleep satisfaction significantly improved, with - in a typical year - 80% to 90% of participants having improved sleep scores.

Stress

We have created an environment in which it is easy for employees to receive stress checks. The rate of stress checks is about 90% every year. We have systems in place so that employees can receive stress checks and consultations at a time which suits them. In addition, as part of our mental health measures, we provide annual self-care training for all employees and line-care training for managers and supervisors (both delivered online).

Smoking Cessation Support

The head office and the Comprehensive Learning and Training Center are completely non-smoking facilities. We hold Metro No-Smoking Day in field workplaces, and close smoking areas during the day shift to encourage non-smoking. In addition, as part of our smoking cessation measures, we previously had an in-house smoking cessation support desk throughout the year and subsidized the cost of smoking cessation treatment at external medical institutions. From FY2025/3, we began providing individualized guidance on smoking cessation from physicians. We are continuing to work to create an environment that makes it easier for smokers to quit, in order to promote a complete ban on smoking throughout the company.

Other (by Segment)

We hold annual sessions for female employees on the prevention of disorders and diseases specific to women. In addition to learning the basic structure of the body and diseases, the program includes self-care methods to regulate autonomic nerves and experiences finding breast cancer lumps using the Breast Self-Examination Model, both of which are easy to implement in daily life.
